WWII-Era Bicorn Hat Naval Dress Set in Case:

Circa 1942-1947. The U.S. Navy set comprised of a faux fur bicorn hat with gold braid and brocade trim (size 7 1/4, Midshipmen’s Store label); formal gold braid/brocade epaulettes; Captain’s rank insignia shoulder boards; and brocade sword belt/gilt buckle; in a fitted faux leather case (19″ x 8 1/4″ x 6 1/2″). Condition: overall good; scattered spots of wear to fur on hat. FROM THE FAMILY OF CAPTAIN CARLETON COLE CHAMPION, JR. (1896-1971). Champion, Jr. was born in Savannah, Georgia. In WWI he served as a Midshipman on the U.S.S. Wyoming and U.S.S. Kansas. He later trained as a Naval Aviator, set elevation world records, and engaged in aeronautics development. A succession of commandments followed his attainment of Captain rank, culminating with Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Station, Livermore, California, 1943-1946.
