Saint-Lanne Louis “Fountain of the Seals” or “Fontaine des phoques” bronzes depicting naturalistic seals with children atop, each with naturally weathered green patina. Engraved signature and date: “Saint-Lanne Louis, 1917” Foundry mark: “The Henry Bonnard Bronze Co. MT. Vernon NY, 1917″ Originally displayed as part of the fountain in the entrance of (New York, New York’s, Brooklyn Betsy Head Park).
Provenance: (1916, Mrs. Julia Barnett Rice (1860-1929) presented to the municipality of Brooklyn, a gate and fountain, to be erected at the entrance of the Betsy Head Playground, in Brownsville, as a memorial to her husband, Isaac L. Rice (1850-1915) lawyer, businessman, musicologist. The fountain depicts a group of children and seals at play in the water. (1918 Homans, p. 542)
