Jose Vives-Atsara, Marsh Scene

Winning Bid: $3,750

Jose Vives-Atsara, Marsh Scene:

Jose Vives-Atsara (Spanish/San Antonio, Texas, 1919-2004), marsh scene, oil on canvas sight: 16 x 20 in., frame: 21.5 x 25.5 in. One of the most popular and memorable figures in the South Texas art milieu, Jose Vives-Atsara dazzled with his vibrant palette and spirited personality, developing a distinct expressive style based on a thick paint impasto and the use of only nine colors mixed in a variety of ways. A native Spaniard, Vives-Atsara developed a love of painting at an early age, and by 11 he had committed himself to the artistic pursuit. At only 14 he held his first solo exhibition, at the Saint Raymond College School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Later, in 1947, now married, Vives-Atsara moved first to Venezuela, and then Mexico, continuing his artistic career. And then in 1956 he obtained the required visas to settle permanently in the United States, moving his family to San Antonio, Texas. Vives-Atsara developed a close relationship with the Incarnate Word College (now the University of the Incarnate Word), becoming, over the years, both a professor of art, and Artist in Residence. As a painter, he portrayed many local scenes including the San Antonio Missions and the San Antonio River, as well as depictions of the landscapes of his childhood home of Catalonia. His distinctive works are displayed in prominent homes and buildings across South Texas and beyond. We happily provide seamless shipping services on everything we sell.
