James Edward Buttersworth (1817-1894) The Clipper Ship Staghound. Circa 1850. Stag Hound was launched on December 7, 1850 in East Boston, Massachusetts. Designed by shipbuilder Donald McKay for the California trade, she was briefly the largest merchant ship in the world. She was in active service from 1851 until her total loss in 1861.Signed LR. Oil on canvas. Frame: H 34-3/4″ W 41-5/8″ D 2-1/4″. Canvas: H 29-1/8″ W 36″. Provenance: Forsyth Wickes (1876-1964) Collection. Condition: Relined. Inspected under UV light. No retouching noted.
