Mozart founded the Mozart Watch Company in Providence, Rhode Island. After reorganizing as the New York Watch Company in 1867 and relocating to Springfield, Massachusetts, the business faced a major setback when its factory was destroyed by fire in 1870. In 1877, the operation resumed under the name Hampden Watch Company. Over time, the company’s identity evolved, and in 1923 it merged into the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company. This combined enterprise ceased operations in 1930, with its manufacturing equipment sold to the Soviet Union, forming the basis of Moscow’s early watchmaking industry. The Dueber Watch Case Company, established in the late 19th century by John C. Dueber, was a leading American manufacturer of watch cases and supplied many cases to Hampden, including gold and gold-filled examples such as the present piece. Case diameter (excluding the bow): 2″dia. Case thickness: 0.5″W. Case Diameter with bow: 3″L x 2″ dia. Bow: 19.05mm. The overall weight of the pocket watch is 4.1 ounces.
