Early 18th Century Original Oil Painting, Portrait of French Nobility, Signed:
This splendid half-length Portrait of a Nobleman is an original oil on canvas painting. Following the tradition of Late Baroque French paintings made in the studio of Hyacinthe Rigaud, favorite portraitist of king Louis XIV. The sitter wears a flowing wig fashionable at the Chateau of Versailles and his silk costume reveals stylized fleur-de-lis made with golden threads in the fashion worn by the French monarchy. The white jabot painted with minute brushstrokes highlights the finery of the lace. A loose red ribbon falls delicately by the blue ribbon of the French order of chivalry. These attributes enhance the face of the sitter who looks at the viewer, yet appears in a thoughtful moment of self-reflection. A partial view of a landscape and clouds behind trees complete this outstanding painting. Signature and date on verso: Illegible, Pinxit. 1705. Artwork dimensions: 13.50″L x 16.25″H.
