Antique Matthaus Seutter Colored Copper Engraving on Paper, Framed Map
This exquisite antique map, Diversi Globi Terr-Aquei, was created by renowned German cartographer Matthaus Seutter and published circa 1730. A highly decorative double hemisphere map, it presents the world in two main projections, surrounded by celestial spheres, wind heads, and geographical insets. Printed on laid paper with fine early hand coloring, this copper engraving exemplifies Seutter’s elaborate cartographic style. Seutter, one of the most celebrated German mapmakers of the 18th century, apprenticed under Johann Baptist Homann and gained recognition for his detailed maps and atlases, leading to his appointment as Geographer to the Imperial Court in 1731. First appearing in Atlas Novus between 1728 and 1730, this map is part of a set of five featuring various global projections, including polar views and oblique perspectives illustrating Earth’s sphericity. Despite its artistic embellishments, the map contains notable geographical inaccuracies. California is depicted as an island in five projections, the North West coast is misshapen, and Australia and New Zealand appear incomplete. Japan is illustrated with an unusual form, incorporating Terra Yedso. Richly detailed and historically significant, this map remains one of Seutters most attractive and compelling works, offering a fascinating glimpse into early cartographic interpretations of the world.
