The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic “Walking Liberty” design, a revival of the 1916 half dollar motif, with Lady Liberty striding toward the dawn’s light, draped in the flag of the United States and bearing branches of laurel and oak. The reverse, designed by John Mercanti, displays a heraldic eagle with shield, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with a ribbon inscribed “E Pluribus Unum” and thirteen stars above representing the original colonies.
