1917 $1 Legal Tender Sawhorse Banknote:
A 1917 $1 Legal Tender Note, often referred to by collectors as the “Sawhorse” note, referencing the prominent “X” design element across the reverse. This note is part of the final series to use this distinctive design type. The obverse side of the note prominently features a central portrait of George Washington, flanked to the far left by an engraving of Christopher Columbus and his crew sighting land – an image adapted from the painting “Landing of Columbus.” A red Treasury seal appears to the left of Washington’s portrait, accompanied by vivid red overprint serial numbers: A1407007A. The note is further inscribed with the signatures of Houston Benge Teehee as Register of the Treasury and John Burke as Treasurer of the United States. The reverse side exhibits an elaborate green engraving with a large central “X” crossed by the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” which gives the note its “Sawhorse” nickname. Additional inscriptions include “ONE DOLLAR” repeated at each corner and ornate design elements surrounding a framed legal tender clause and the denomination. The text “SERIES OF 1917” is printed along the left margin. This banknote represents a historically significant issue from early 20th-century American currency, known for its complex design and role in daily commerce during the era.
