Early Spring Mid 20th Century Furniture & Decorative Arts

A key lot of the upcoming Furniture and Decorative Arts auction, presented by Ambianic Mid-Century Collectibles, is a rosewood desk designed by Frank Kyle. Originally from Minneapolis, Kyle opened a furniture gallery in Mexico City during the 1950s. There, he collaborated with the foundry of Pepe Mendoza to create the available custom desk. This piece features a single tapered mahogany and goatskin leg and a circular opening covered in gold leaf. The desk’s bronze hardware is distinguished by Mendoza’s foundry marks. Another of Kyle’s highlighted furniture piece is a solid mahogany and silver leaf credenza.  With a particular focus on Mid-Century Modern furniture, this auction includes nearly 250 lots. Among the leading items is a brass and brown leather floor lamp by Italian designer Angelo Lelli. The lamp has been rewired for use and has three black, red, and white shades. A lithograph from Mexican Surrealist Pedro Friedeberg will also be presented. Repeating images of houses, pyramids, sailboats, and stars create an optical illusion that tunnels toward a black knot. Two matching drawer handles by Los Castillo, a vintage Picasso linocut, and an oil painting by Miguel Alvarez Acosta are offered as well. A Mid Summer Buy Now Sale Event of Mid-20th Century Furniture, Collectibles & More

Some auctions present lots from one country or civilization, while others, such as the Midsummer Buy Now Sale presented by Ambianic, offer pieces from all over the world. Ambianic specializes in mid-20th-century art, and their midsummer auction is no exception.  One of the most distinctive collectibles is a British lighter inspired by Alfred Dunhill Limited. The lighter has a strange, durian-like color and texture. This effect is achieved with silver-plated brass and shagreen leather.  Decorative Arts make up the majority of lots in this auction. Among the pieces with the highest estimated value is a stone and copper sculpture from Rancho Santa Fe, California. Little is known about the sculpture’s origins, but it has a modern, abstract aesthetic. Ambianic notes that the piece will require professional handling for moving and installation.  Meanwhile, the most notable furniture item in this buy-now auction is a Mexican Modernist wall unit made with mahogany and goatskin. The piece has a sculptural, minimalist design except for a door which contains a traditional Japanese-inspired painting. Buyers will have the opportunity to purchase mid-century items from Mexico, England, America, and elsewhere at one buy-now price. Lots in this auction are primarily fine art, decorative art, furniture, and collectibles. View each of these lots and register to buy on Bidsquare.
