Winter Fine & Decorative Arts Auction

Marc Chagall was best known for his use of color and dream-like imagery, which anticipated Surrealism. His works drew heavily on early 20th-century avant-garde movements such as Fauvism and Cubism. A gouache-on-paper piece by Chagall is among the highlighted lots in the upcoming Winter Fine & Decorative Arts Auction, presented by Cordier Auctions & Appraisals. The painting shows a ballerina and a horse dancing beneath a moon, all in shades of white and blue.  An IWC Schaffhausen Portofino men's wristwatch is highlighted in the sale. The dials of these watches have Roman numerals and simple hour markers. The Swiss watch manufacturer, IWC Schaffhausen, launched its Portofino line in 1984. Another lot of interest is a bronze sculpture titled Horse World by Snell Johnson. This piece is a model for a life-sized Horse World sculpture, which Johnson created for the entrance of the WestWorld center in Scottsdale, Arizona. This model shows a group of three horses—an Arabian, a thoroughbred, and a quarter horse—in various positions. View each lot and register to bid on Invaluable.

18th Century Antiques Find New Life At Cordier’s Fall Fine And Decorative Arts Auction

Cordier Auctions, located in Harrisburg, PA, held their fall Antique and Fine Art Auction on November 10 and 11. The sale featured rare antiques and luxury goods from all collecting categories, drawing bidders from around the globe. Early examples of American craftsmanship and artistry were particularly well-received by bidders. An intricately decorated tall case clock by Massachusetts master clockmaker Simon Willard, featuring a rocking ship-automaton to the arch, sold to a bidder online for $9,000, while an 18th century PA Windsor settee brought $5,000. The settee was one of several pieces consigned by the Rutherford House in Harrisburg, PA. Built in 1858, the mansion now known as the Rutherford House was the Rutherford family’s home until 1920, when it was sold to Dauphin County. Today, the mansion is used as a senior center. The home and the Rutherford family played a significant role in the Underground Railroad during the mid-1800s. Dr. William Wilson Rutherford was vice president of the Harrisburg Antislavery Society in 1847 and provided a station for escaped slaves at his home on South Front Street in Harrisburg. From there, he conveyed them to what is now the Rutherford House, where they were hidden in a barn that once stood nearby. Other antiques offered from this historic home included an English tall case clock with horses, and an early 19th century needlepoint sampler. Jewelry, both antique and modern, remains a popular category at these quarterly auctions, and Cordier’s fall installment featured a fine selection. Top lots included a 14K 1.60 carat diamond solitaire ring ($4,200) and an antique gemstone lizard brooch ($3,300). A model 3417 dress wristwatch by renowned Swiss manufacturer Patek Phillipe inspired competitive bidding before hammering down at $24,000 to an online bidder. Although the market for porcelain and glassware has softened over the past decade, a handsome range of porcelain found heavy interest throughout the second day of the sale, including seven large Lladro figures from a private collection. Of those, the late 1970’s sculpture “Jockey and Lady” sold for $475. A large Chinese Baluster form lidded vase dated to the 18th or 19th century brought $1,600. French artists…

Americana Meets Fantasy In Cordier’s Fall Fine And Decorative Arts Auction

Three ships are tossed on choppy waves, the American flags rippling out from each one’s prow in the fierce easterly wind. Behind them, a lighthouse stands as the marker between safety and adventure, a nod to the Massachusetts landscape that master clockmaker Simon Willard called home. The ships, perpetually heading out to sea, decorate the arch of a tall case clock by Willard that Cordier Auctions will be selling in its Fall Fine and Decorative Arts auction. The painted automaton increases the rarity of this clock, itself one of only 1,200 manufactured by Willard during the late 1700’s. Cordier expects that the clock will bring between $8,000 and $12,000 in the auction, which will be held November 10th and 11th. Along with the clock, other pieces of American history will be crossing the block, including a very early Pennsylvania Windsor settee, likely made in Harrisburg during the early days of the 18th century. A 19th century needlepoint sampler, a 1900 Koken oak and leather barber chair, and a mid-18th century Queen Anne tiger maple highboy will also highlight this category. Over the course of two days, the auction will span categories from antique furniture to fine jewelry and sterling. Among the latter categories, stand out lots include a wristwatch by renowned Swiss manufacturer Patek Philippe, as well as an 18K brooch by mid-century jewelry artisan Ed Wiener. Wiener started his career in silver, but his later gold pieces were considered by critics as a move “from craft into art,” as his New York Times obituary puts it. The popular jewelry and sterling category will also include a truly striking Towle sterling flatware set in the Lady Mary pattern, containing nearly 250 pieces of sterling and sterling-handled utensils and serving pieces in a massive storage case. Woven throughout the auction are threads of fantasy and wonder inspired by artists like Mathurin Moreau, whose mythology-derived works grace numerous noble courtyards in France. A bronze sculpture after his work, depicting a woman and a fairy, lends an air of otherworldliness to this auction, which also includes a French gilt and marble mantle clock topped by a sculpture…
