Damien Hirst’s Heart Spin Painting, Red Grooms’ Gertrude Stein Portrait Lead the Solstice Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art

Celebrating the theme of love, Dane Fine Art will start its Solstice Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art with Damien Hirst’s Heart Spin Painting (2009). It is an acrylic on paper piece created with public collaboration at the Damien Hirst Spin Workshop to celebrate the opening of Requiem at the Pinchuk Art Centre, Ukraine. Hirst intends the viewers to be face to face with things that are generally dismissed or avoided, like death. Contrary to what he normally creates, the available artwork is a colorful take on a heart with streaks of light and dark shades, seemingly moving inwards and outwards. Another lot leading the fine art category is Le The au Jardin by Louis Icart. It is an oil on canvas, hand signed in paint by the artist. Gertrude Stein is a three-dimensional lithograph on BFK Rives in a Plexiglas box by Red Grooms. Created in 1975, it is a rare limited AP edition published by Brooke Alexander Inc. It is hand signed. Gertrude Stein (American, 1874 - 1946) was a key figure in Modernism in art and literature. She gave up a career in medicine at Johns Hopkins to follow her dreams of becoming a writer and an artist. Stein was a host and a sanctuary for writers like James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. In 1933, Stein published a quasi-memoir of her Paris years, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, a tribute to her lifelong partner Alice. This book became a literary bestseller and vaulted Stein from the cult-literature scene into the limelight. This Solstice Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art will also offer artworks by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and others. Louis Icart’s Cabaret Dancers & Cover Girl Kate Moss by Mr. Brainwash Available in Luxor Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art

Cabaret dancers dancing to a pianist in an untitled painting by Louis Icart is leading the upcoming Luxor Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art. Dane Fine Art will host the event this May, offering more than 1,000 lots. The painting by Icart (1888 - 1950) is a unique oil on board that is unlike Icart’s usual sensual and glamourous depictions of women. This painting is chaotic, colorful, and abstract, making the subjects hard to separate from one another. Icart is recognized as one of France’s top Art Deco artists, while his etchings are now symbols of the epoch. Cover Girl featuring Kate Moss by Mr. Brainwash is also a notable lot. Made in 2017, it is a color screen-print with paint on paper, hand signed on front by Mr. Brainwash. Discovered at the age of 14, Kate Moss caught the attention of Sarah Doukas and then the fashion industry at large. In the 1990s, she was photographed in a stark, un-stylized, candid manner by the British photographer Corinne Day. She has worked with many famous brands since. The sale marks Dane Fine Art’s 44th year with artworks by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Julian Opie, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and others. Contemporary Classic Artworks Come to Auction with 500 Gallery

Sanyu, a Chinese-French artist, was one of the prominent oil painters from China to have studied in France in the early 20th century. He was trained in calligraphy under the aegis of the Sichuan calligrapher Zhao Xi. Blue Chrysanthemums in a Glass Vase, an oil on Masonite in the manner of Sanyu, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from 500 Gallery. It portrays a vase with flowers, which was one of the artist’s popular subjects. It exemplifies his style of simple compositions, neat lines, and an undiluted color palette.  A striking painting attributed to American artist Sam Francis also leads the catalog. The Abstract Expressionist gouache on paper will be sold with a frame. Francis developed a massive collection of works on paper, prints and monotypes, which are displayed across illustrious museums the world over. Another notable Abstract Expressionist work is attributed to Hans Hofmann. The German-born American teacher and painter is noted for creating a spatial illusion through use of bold primary colors and shapes. Also of note is Rosie O'Donnell’s The Pope's Brother, a mixed media on canvas. His pastel on paper titled Plenty Treaties, from circa 1943, is available in the upcoming Western & Contemporary Native American Art Auction, offered by Hindman. Winold Reiss (1886 - 1953) was a German-American artist, graphic designer, and portraitist. He moved from Germany to the United States in 1913. After exploring the U.S., he was able to follow his interest in Native Americans, working for a lengthy period on the Blackfeet Reservation. Contemporary Paintings by American Artists Highlight Hindman’s Upcoming Sale

Artist Kerry James Marshall is well known for his representation of the marginalized Black American community, deeply influenced by his own origins. His depictions are marked by the striking use of glitter to emphasize the “unseen.”  Curtained Window (2005), one such mixed media and glitter on paper by Marshall, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Hindman. The composition portrays an urban landscape with a tree in the center and residential buildings in the background. Experimenting with optics, Marshall creates a sense of three-dimensional entry into the two-dimensional space with the golden shimmery curtains. Strongly inspired by Ralph Ellison’s 1952 classic Invisible Man, Marshall employed sparkle as a tool of shifting attention from hypervisibility to “un-visibility.” Another noteworthy painting in the sale is Jack Bush’s oil on canvas titled Green Diamond. It characterizes his association with Color Field Painting and Lyrical Abstraction, under the tutelage of American art critic Clement Greenberg. Gertrude Abercrombie’s Birds Eggs and Dominoes with Pyramid also leads the offerings. The still-life composition includes the frequently-portrayed eggs and dominoes that were of personal significance to Abercrombie. However, the pyramid was relatively unusual in her works. Visit Hindman to view the complete catalog and register to bid in the upcoming Post War & Contemporary sale.

Julian Opie’s This Is Shahnoza 2, David LaChapelle Artwork Lead Timed April Showers Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art

Julian Opie’s This Is Shahnoza 2 removes the usual notion of sensuality from pole dancing. This is a hand-signed and numbered silkscreen on somerset satin paper by Opie, made in 2006, available in this timed April Showers Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art from Dane Fine Art. It is numbered from a rare, limited AP edition of 11. “I hope [my paintings] have a powerful connection to reality, an ability to evoke reality,” Opie states, because he believes that an artwork observes and yet must exist within the reality it discusses. A graduate from Goldsmiths School of Art, Julian Opie has exhibited internationally. His works are in many noted art collections, including Tate, the British Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. La Maison Abandonnée, an artwork by Maurice de Vlaminck, is another notable lot. It depicts an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere, completed in 1945. It has a gloomy mood with dull colors and a swirling cloud above. Maurice de Vlaminck (1876 - 1958) was a French painter. He is considered one of the principal figures of Fauvism. He used intense colors rather than realistic or traditional colors to emphasize or deemphasize his subjects. Also available in the upcoming auction are David LaChapelle’s chromogenic print of Anna Kournikova in an all-red ensemble, as well as Jim Dine’s The Red Talisman, a woodblock print over red house paint from a rare limited edition of five. I Hate Art That Hangs From Ceilings by Walter Robinson Offered in Modern & Contemporary Art Sale

From an early age, Louis Icart (French, 1888 - 1950) showed the potential of a great artist. Icart learned the techniques of 18th-century French masters like Jean-Antoine Watteau, Claude Monet, and Odilon Redon. Icart's most famous paintings depict women in a sublime, sensual, and graceful way, often alongside pets. The facial expressions in his paintings are full of passion, dismay, or surprise. An oil on board painting by Louis Icart, titled Une Cigarette, is available in the upcoming Spring Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art. Dane Fine Art will also offer Flower Black and White by Andy Warhol, French Village 1 by Julian Opie, and Marilyn Monroe by Mr. Brainwash in this sale. I Hate Art That Hangs From Ceilings by Walter Robinson is a notable acrylic on canvas work in the catalog. In the painting, a figure hangs by the neck on a rope from the ceiling alongside some hanging art, justifying the morbid title. The gray interior of the room contrasts with the colorful art and furniture in it. Robinson is a Neo-pop painter who captures commercialism and kitsch in the postmodern era. The artist wants his viewers to steer away from hard-wired, socially constructed responses and rather have individual responses to his art. Phillips Offers Contemporary Art by Mickalene Thomas, Titus Kaphar, Christopher Wool, and More

The upcoming New Now sale, presented by Phillips, samples from the cutting edge of ultra-contemporary art. Notable works include a mixed media on canvas by Mickalene Thomas and a mixed media on etched magnesium by Frank Stella. Thomas’ available work is titled Clarivel #7 and was executed in 2019. Like many of Thomas’ paintings and collages, this work is a celebration of beauty, individuality, and confidence. To depict a woman easily reclining on a chaise lounge, the present work uses shades of gray and tan, as well as techniques borrowed from Cubism, Impressionism, and Blaxploitation cinema.  Titus Kaphar’s Both King and Accomplice will also cross the auction block this March. This 2008 piece is composed of an oil on canvas painting, a tar-covered steel container, and a wood base. The black container partially obscures a portrait of a white man wearing a hat. Kaphar’s art often handles themes of both rewriting and obscuring history. Kaphar considers these issues by covering his subjects or adding voids to mark the absence of Black figures in Western art history. The upcoming Phillips event will highlight additional works by Robert Nava, Christopher Wool, and Emma Webster. A selection of lots in the catalog will benefit Foster Pride, a nonprofit organization that empowers and supports teenagers in foster care. To browse the New Now auction and register to bid, visit Phillips.
